Liz Claiborne was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1929 and died in 2007. After 25 years as a New York designer, Liz Claiborne founded her own firm in 1976. Hers was the first company founded by a woman to be listed in the Fortune 500. She was the first designer to insist that her collection be placed together on the department store floor instead of in separate clothing categories. This revolutionized fashion merchandising as we know it today.
