Timothy Dwight, a president of Yale Univeraity and an inveterate traveler in New England,  kept written records of the eight journeys he made through the area between 1792 and 1815.  The principal text of this oversized, 317-page book is based upon Dwight's book containing those records.  Wheelwright has edited his text, as well as written commentaries on it and provided a long introduction.  But it is the 320 black-and-white photographs by Knowles that really dominate this book.  She literally followed in his footsteps, photographing each New England state much as Dwight must have seen them.  Vol. 1 of this work was separately published in 1972; this is the first edition of Vol. 2, which has been combined with Vol. 1.

An added feature here is that this is an association copy -- an illustrated stamp on the ffep (see scan) reveals that it was in the personal library of noted wildlife illustrator Linda K. Powell.  (A copy of the estate auction brochure where it was purchased [prior to my acquistion] is inserted in the book.)

Minimal wear on the book's exterior; the interior is excellent, though there is light page toning.  The jacket has some short edge tears and the spine is somewhat sunnedwith two small chafe marks.  This combined edition is actually more uncommon than the earlier Vol. 1 edition.
