In the late 1960s, Barry Ryan (Bryan Brown) is a Sydney crime boss who rules the slot machine trade. Having the local police chief (Sam Neill) in his pocket is a help and Barry's Vietnam vet nephew Darcy (Sam Worthington) is just joining the business, but Barry does have some personal trouble with his tough wife Sharon (Toni Collette) and young mistress Margaret (Kestie Morassi).

Then, a couple of Chicago wiseguys show up: down-to-earth Tony (John Goodman) and his hot-headed colleague Sal (Felix Williamson) have been instructed to muscle in on Barry's turf, but Barry is not about to let these interlopers interfere with his business. A bold combination of charm, comedy, and violence.
