Great period action costume drama of 1764-1767 based on actual famous legend. With the provinces terrorized by an elusive beast "with teeth like knives" that preys exclusively on women and children, beleagured King Louis XV orders an investigation by royal taxidermist Gregoire de Fronsac (Samuel Le Bihan). Measuring the bite marks on the corpses of the victims, Fronsac concludes that the predator is no mere wolf but a creature weighing 500 lbs. and possessed of preternatural strength.
As winter arrives with no cessation in the slaughter, and Versailles edgy over speculation that the monster is an insturment of divine retribution, Fronsac arms himself and rides into the forest accompanied by his Iraquois brother-in-arms Mani (Mark Dacascos), to confront, capture and save the world from the beast.
Epic story at 2 1/2 hours is a bizarre homespun costume piece, occult drama, sexual fantasy, and horror film! Every scene is steeped in atmosphere, wether it be in bright daylight, twilight or darkness thanks in part to the sound design.
