The Troubled Reign of King Stephen 1135-1154 by John T. Appleby
published by B&N, 1995

from the dustjacket:
Despite the  popularity of King Stephen at the commencement of his reign, his easygoing ways and his clemency in a brutal age made him unsuited to deal out the harsh measures that would have put an early end to the activities of his rebellious barons.
Based on the writings of the contemporary chroniclers, The Troubled Reign of King Stephen, is a lively and enlightening account of one of the less-well-known periods of English History.
