LIFE'S COVER: Madame Jeanne Becu du Barry, said to be the illegitimate daughter of a French monk, became the sixth of the seven official mistresses of King Louis XV of France. A Paris courtesan, she was living in the gambling house of a Count du Barry when the king's valet introduced her to Louis. In 1769 she was installed officially in the palace. The fact that Du Barry could rise to such heights is typical of the Age of Enlightenment (pp. 75 -- 94), when a woman's wit and beauty could sway the courts of Europe. When the age ended, this same pretty head, here painted by Francois Drouais, fell to the guillotine.
