LIFE's COVER: "U. S. AMBASSADOR to BRITAIN LEWIS W. DOUGLAS". Before he was appointed ambassador to Great Britain, 53-year-dla Lewis Douglas already had several careers behind him. A graduate of Amherst, he served as a lieutenant in World War I. Since then, although he inherited a copper fortune, he has worked as a fruitgrower, miner, congressman, director of the budget, vice president of American Cyanamid Company, vice chancellor of McGill University, deputy war-shipping administrator and prcsident of the Mutual Life Insurance Co. of New York.
