I came across this hand fired Chinese Mud Man or Mudman sculpture at a recent Estate Sale. I have listed several of these and will combine shipping if more than one is purchased. Most of these were from the 1970s according to the person at the sale. These figurines are commonly known as mud figures, mud people, mud men, or mudmen. They are from China. The Chinese have long created the miniature trees called Bonsai and these were created to add to the forests to create living images.
This man is the largest I have listed. He has exquisite details in his face with a unique facial expression that looks so real you expect him to begin to speak. This piece is in excellent condition except it is missing a part of the beard. If you are at all creative or know someone who is it could easily be touched up with a bit of clay, white acrylic paint over dried Elmer’s Glue or rubber cement.
It measures 3 1/4” inches tall and 2” inches wide. The entire figurine is a tan/grey with white hair and brown accents. The man is sitting on a tree stump, which is painted brown holding his fishing rod and the fish at the end of the line he just caught. On his side is what appears to be his version of our modern bait bucket. The painstaking detail in this sculpture is wonderful down to the textured clothing and the realistic face.
This would be a perfect addition to your collection of Chinese artwork, Mudmen or the start of a new one.
