Karl Zembrusky is a Durham, New Hampshire resident, though he did not always reside there. He graduated from New York’s Art Career School, where he took the traditional classes of drawing and painting and learned anatomy and perspective. He began his career as a commercial artist in Manhattan. He did well, working for himself and creating visuals for advertising agencies. In 1978 he “retired” young to pursue fine arts. He was always drawn to things from the 19th century - buggies, wagons and horses - so he moved to Lancaster, Pa., and lived there eight or nine years painting scenes from the lives of the Amish. He also had a passion for the Civil War era and painted scenes from Gettysburg, attending re-enactments and taking photographs. “People bought my Civil War paintings, but they needed to be historically accurate,” he says. Zembrusky found he needed to buy historic equipment to be able to reproduce all of the needed details. “My art caught on quickly, I won awards and was able to sell my work. I was invited to be a member of the Salmagundi Club, the oldest art club in America. I got to rub elbows with famous artists there. For 15 years I made a living with (fine art),” Zembrusky says. By 1993, he no longer needed to push his work to sell it, and he remarried and “retired” from fine art. “I’m still doing art, just not on the same scale,” Zembrusky says.
