COVER: Heat and Dust, a novel by Ruth Prawer.

FEATURES INSIDE:
POST-COLONIAL INDIAN LITERATURE: In 1981,when Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children was awarded Britain's foremost literary accolade, the Booker Prize, India was placed squarely on the literary map. The 1980s and 1990s have seen an explosion of superb Indian literature in English, culminating in 1997 with Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things.

FIVE MAJOR VICTORIAN WOMEN NOVELISTS: After Charles Dickens -- the most popular of all Victorian novelists -- came such literary lights as Anthony Trollope, William Thackeray, Thomas Hardy and five women who were grandmasters of the form. Three were Brontes: Charlotte, Emily and Anne. Two more who deserve to be included are George Eliot, whose real name was Marian Evans, and Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell.

VICTORIAN WOMEN NOVELISTS: A SELECTIVE CHECKLIST: Collectors will have to determine which copy is satisfactory for their personal libraries. Copies in fine condition -- when they show up -- can bring record prices. Very good to near fine copies may be more affordable. Lesser copies are more common and inexpensive, but may compromise a collection.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIBRARY: Frank Capra's Rare Book Collection. Most people associate Frank Capra with films, not rare books. The director of some the most memorable pictures of all time -- It Happened One Night, You Can't Take It with You and Lost Horizon, just to name a few -- also owned one of the finest book collections in Hollywood.

BOOKS INTO FILM: Heat and Dust, a novel by Ruth Prawer; Jhabvala, a film by James Ivory.
