DADDY-LONG-LEGS by Jean Webster
Grosset & Dunlap, 1915(?)
First Illustrated Play Edition
Condition: Very Good
This is Jean Webster's best-known novel. Originally published in 1912,
most of the book is in the form of letters from 17-year-old orphan Judy Abbott to her "Daddy-Long-Legs". A dramatic version opened on Broadway in 1915 with Ruth Chatterton in her star-making role as Judy. (She's pictured in several illustrations in the book.) It was subsequently filmed under its own name three times, with Judy played by Mary Pickford, Janet Gaynor and Leslie Caron (in the Fred Astaire musical version) and also was the basis of the Shirley Temple vehicle "Curly Top" ("Animal Crackers in My Soup"). Bent cover corners, a little light wear and a stamped name and a written Christmas inscription on the ffep. (The inscription is dated "1930", but it was more likely published circa 1915.) The hinges are firm. Lacks the dust jacket. A bright, solid copy.
