Back in the early 1600's American colonists first attached a cart to a horse and popularized the sport of harness racing, but it wasn't until the 1800's that the sport became organized as racetracks sprouted in every town. The founding sire of the sport was an English stallion named MESSENGER; however, his grandson, HAMBLETONIAN, became the patriarch of the modern Standardbred. Harness racing has had its share of legendary horses such as the undefeated DAN PATCH, GREYHOUND, BRET HANOVER; however, the greatest of them all is NIATROSS.
This highly entertaining documentary takes a fascinating look at some of NIATROSS' greatest achievements as told by Clint Galbraeth, his constant rider/racing manager/part-owner; how his career was charted, guided and of the three goals Galbraeth had set for NIATROSS. Some of his outstanding achievements are his Triple Crown sweep in 1979 as a two-year old in which he ran undefeated in thirteen starts and upon his return to the track as a three-year-old resulting in his making and shattering world records at nearly every stop.
Watch racing footage of his Woodrow Wilson Pace and Kentucky pacing Derby as a two-year-old and as he became pacing's sixth Triple Crown winner in 1980 taking all three, "jewels", in devastating fashion: "The Cane", "The Little Brown Jug" and "The Messenger".
Just when he seemed unbeatable after his 19th win from as many starts, he inexplicably went over the rail at Saratoga in the $1 Million Meadow Pace; he was steadily moving on the inside towards the leaders when tragedy struck.
He quickly regained his championship form in the races ahead and clinched Horse-of-the-Year title for the second year in a row. The stamp of a great Standardbred is the ability to travel a mile in under two minutes - of the 39 races NIATROSS had competed in he broke the two-minute barrier 34 times and he re-wrote all the record books setting fourteen new world records and ten track records.
He was the first Standardbred to win $2 million and his time of 1:49:1 is considered one of the greatest feats in sports history; unquestionably, NIATROSS is the best pacer there ever was!
