In 1894, a tradition was born that has lasted a hundred years; a group of fox hunters gathered in Green Spring Valley, Maryland, to create the Maryland Hunt Cup. A permanent course was established in 1922 on the Worthington Farm - a daunting four-mile course with its 22 fences which became known as the most formidable and prestigious steeplechasing event in America; its reputation remains today.
Drama, tragedy and triumph have colored the history of this race. Legends of men, women and horses have been marked in its annals and many of its past participants describe and relive the history of the race over the years. This film tells of the tradition and pageantry in the voices of the men and women who lived it - the winners, the losers and those who simply rode for the love of the challenge.
Through personal accounts, fascinating period films and anecdotes dating back to the 1930's, the rich and colorful tapestry of 100 years of the fabled Maryland Hunt Cup comes alive. We come to realize that it is more than a horse race...it is a celebration of the human spirit and a testament to man's love affair with the horse. Narrated by Jim McKay.
