From the earliest harvest ceremonies, when bread was baked int he shape of larks, the Russian people have embodied their creative ideas in images. It was a natural step hence to the arts of the theater. After crude beginnings in the 17th century, when audiences sat in semi-darkness and pickpockets lifted thei valuables, the theare made rapid strides. In the 18th and 19th centuries it developed a richness and brilliance which was not far behind that of Western Europe. This in spite of wretched conditions, for up to the middle of the 19th century many actors were serfs who had to do manual labor when they were not playing or rehearsing.
