Orchestration 1: Threshold: The city of Tokyo has been overthrown, taken over by the Mu, invaders who have devastated the rest of the planet. Within the domed walls of the city, however, time flows in a different path, and none of the citizens even know they've been conquered. Outside Tokyo, the remnants of the human race have fought a desperate 15- year war against the Mu, knowing only that the key to victory lies within the occupied city. But no one has been able to get into Tokyo-until Ayato Kamina, a young resident fleeing a horrifying attack on the city, unwittingly breaks out. An extraordinary mystery unfolds as Ayato confronts a world he has never known, and begins to learn the horrifying secrets of RahXephon, a humanoid super weapon which apparently only he can control.
Orchestration 2: Tonal Pattern: As RahXephon progresses, a number of parallels with Hideaki Anno's Neon Genesis Evangelion emerge. Ayato, like Shinji, is the reluctant, chosen pilot of a fantastic mecha; the officers of TERRA are using Ayato as a pawn, as the directors of SEELE used Shinji. The Dolem, the gigantic flying fortresses of the Mu, recall the menacing Angels. But unlike many Evangelion clones, RahXephon is challenging and intriguing. Although Ayato is understandably uncertain about his role in a strange time and place, he remains less alienated and more likable than the schizophrenic Shinji. The interpersonal relationships surrounding Ayato are more complex and involve more humane characters than the remote Commander Ikari or the emotionally scarred Misako. Director Yutaka Izubuchi preserves a sense of mystery without allowing the story to degenerate into incomprehensibility, as he did in the muddled Gasaraki.
Orchestration 3: Harmonic Convergence: As the story of RahXephon unfolds, its similarities to and differences from Neon Genesis Evangelion--the subject of heated online debates--become increasingly evident. Unlike Shinji, Ayato is curious--and suspicious about the events surrounding him. He's right to be suspicious: lurking in the shadows is mysterious billionaire Ernst Von Bähbem, who may be over 500 years old. His relationships with TERRA, the Mulians, and Ayato are only hinted at. Quon begins to discover her latent powers, although "the time of her awakening has not yet come." Music exerts a curious power in this world: Quon floats toward a great Mulian egg singing the familiar "Second Polovtsian Dance" of Borodin. The ultimate success of the series will rest on whether director Yutaka Izubuchi ties all these elements together more satisfactorily than he did in Gasaraki.
Orchestration 4: Dissonance: Tremors ripple through the city as new Dolems attack, but the most dangerous shock waves of all are the mental assaults that now threaten to overwhelm Ayato’s grasp of the physical world itself. As new players enter the deadly game between the humans and the Mu, the young pilot finds himself alone and without backup, struggling to rebuild the foundation of his own reality as the universe threatens to collapse beneath him. Orchestration 5: Synaethesia: Battle Hymn As the Mu's grip on the city of Tokyo tightens, Ayato now finds himself pursued between two worlds, with close friends on both sides seeking to destroy him. Even after all he has experienced thus far, the newest shocks he receives are the most terrifying of all. The secret power source of the Dolems is about to be unveiled, and that secret will haunt him to the grave. In order to live, he must be prepared to sacrifice anything...even the life of a friend. The blood of the innocents will flow in the fifth horrifying volume of RahXephon.
Orchestration 6: Aria: Death Knell As TERRA's obsessive new commander begins a massive build-up for a final assault on Tokyo Jupiter, Ayato's former friend Mamoru attacks Nirai-Kanai in his own Dolem, seeking revenge for Hiroko's death. Meanwhile, a mysterious new cadet has suddenly appeared within TERRA's ranks, a cadet with a hauntingly familiar face. Confronted with his destiny, Ayato must make a terrifying choice: to reclaim the RahXephon or sacrifice everything he holds dear. But even with the RahXephon, can he stop the horror that is about to happen? Too many of his friends are about to die in the sixth shocking volume of RahXephon!
Orchestration 7: Crescendo: Music of the Spheres At long last, the war with the Mu reaches its climax. The truths that have been hidden are finally revealed. As Ayato stands on the brink of making the ultimate choice, the future of not just one man and one woman, but of two sentient races, hangs in the balance. The symphony of light and terror, of treachery and love, at last completes itself in the final astounding volume of RahXephon.
