Vintage Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi Porcelain 18 Inch Floor Vase , ca. 1960-1970s

This is a stunning porcelain floor vase that likely dates back to the 1960’s-1970s, perhaps earlier. It is 18 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter at mid body. It is beautifully decorated with a liberal use gold and decorated with bats, trees, and fruit. A handsome piece, with delightful colors that are the soft pastel colors plus the traditional teal, pink and yellow found in the Famille style of Chinese decorations. It has  the Zhongguo Jingdezhen Zhi red stamp on bottom, but does not have a “ Made in China” mark. We assume, it was not intended for export. The motif depicts bats, a tree, and fruit; it’s really a stunning piece. There is no crazing, no breaks, no hairlines, no cracks and no nicks.

Jingdezhen porcelain is Chinese porcelain produced in or near Jingdezhen in southern China. Jingdezhen may have produced pottery as early as the sixth century CE, though it is named after the reign name of Emperor Zhenzong, in whose reign it became a major kiln site, around 1004. By the 14th century it had become the largest center of production of Chinese porcelain, which it has remained, increasing its dominance in subsequent centuries.  It has produced a great variety of pottery and high quality porcelain due to its close to the best quality deposits of petuntse, (weathered volcanic tuff or porcelain stone), in the area.

The famille rose is characterized by an opaque glassy white enamel (lead arsenate) is employed as the base for coloring flower petals and the colored enamels are either mixed with white or brushed on top of it to created variations in tone. Earlier enamels in this palette were applied with glue as its base which helped with building thick layers of enamels, while later versions, such as this one, are applied with the use of rue oil as a medium, which gives thinner layers.  Fencai (powder colors) is a 19th C term which has been further defined to being "famille rose decor against a white ground".This large vase is marked ZhongGuo Jingdezhen Zhi on the bottom. It is realtively heavy and we are offering free shipping. Because of this we can not entertain offers below our listing price.
