It was 1969. Burton made the film for the family, who wanted to see Dad in a war film. Boozing heavily throughout the shoot, Richard muddled through. The make up department did a spot on job with him. Eastwood refers to this film as "Where Doubles Dared" - referencing his not having to go through the rigorous stunt work needed for the film adaptation, and having stunt doubles and a host of soon-to-be-killed German extras, wearing nifty Wehrmacht uni's. I STILL...cannot get an accurate tabulation of HOW many Germans Eastwood killed. He and Mary Ure back bused machine gunned a boatload of Krauts together - whooo! (I count Eastwood alone at 78 - love to hear from someone with other totals - and another poster is right; the German's couldn't hit water if it fell out of a boat. Burton's hand flesh wound (still able to drive that bus like AJ Foyt) was the only ..the ONLY - wound suffered by the team. Ingrid Pitt was SMOLDERING HOT in this film. Set gossip had Eastwood in a little fling with Pitt. They went together to pick up a motorcycle Eastwood got as part payment for his salary being in the film. He and Burton got on well on set. If I ever meet Clint, one of the first questions I'd ask him is about this film.
