Carpinus orientalis (Oriental Hornbeam) is a hornbeam native from southeastern Europe to northern Iran and occurs usually on hot dry sites at lower altitudes than European Hornbeam.
It is a small tree, rarely over 10 m tall and often shrubby. It has small leaves, 3-5 cm long.
Thrives in any good loam, including chalk, it does not demand much light. Prefers a deep open loam. Grows well in heavy clay soils
