The rounded form of spindletree is lacklustre until autumn when its pink to red fruits split open to show the orange-covered white seeds and its glossy foliage changes to tones of yellow or red. A large shrub to small tree that is deciduous, spindle is native to much of Europe and also western Asia.
With its broad adaptability to any well-draining soil and copious production of seeds, it is invasive in many temperate regions of the world, including the United States.
The glossy dark green leaves are oval and have small scalloped edges. In late spring this plant bears tiny yellow-green flowers, but they are inconspicuous, pollinated by bees. The many round fruits that follow are pretty, being either red, magenta or a rosy pink.
By early autumn the persistent fruits split open to show off the small white seeds with orange seedcoats (aril) that will be eaten by birds and scattered about the landscape. Leaves blush to tones of either yellow-green, yellow or red. The smooth grayish brown bark is punctuated by its youngest twigs that remain green.
Grow spindletree in full sun to partial shade in any moderately fertile well-draining soil regardless of pH. This adaptability and seed production leads to it likely invasiveness. Fast-growing, it is often used as a windbreak, informal hedge or small tree for difficult foundation beds, especially when lowest branches are removed. It is susceptible to euonymus scale.
