"The Circus is coming! The Circus is coming!" We used to have a traveling circus come to my town and the children could watch the elephants and dozens of men raise the canvas tent in preparation for the circus that night. Sadly, the circus, in general, has faded away into the mists of time. I believe they have been supplanted by theme parks and zoos. No longer will children revel in the clowns' antics, the trapeze artists' daring tricks, the performing tigers and lions, the glamorous ladies riding the elephants and much, much, more.
Here to revive those memories is this vintage Fisher Price #902 Junior Circus. This set is EXCEEDINGLY hard to find. About 80% complete, this offering is missing the following HTF-VHTF pieces: 1 red ball, 1 black tub, the canister lid, the original instructions, and 2 yellow poles. I have relegated this set to my "Rough Room." Toys placed in my "Rough Room" do not meet my standards for including them amidst my regular listings of VG+ or above. They, instead, may demonstrate some paint loss, torn lithos, stains, cracks, chips, repairs, abrasions etc. that cause them to fall below my standard of VG+ or above. In my estimation, this offering warrants a VG-VG+ rating.
Manufactured between 1963-70, this play set includes 11 solid wood animals and circus performers that have movable white plastic arms and legs along with circus props such as a trapeze, ladders, yellow connectors, an aerial spinner, and center ring.
Specifically, the play set consists of the following:
2 HTF red, wooden ladders w/white rungs (both VG+-VG++--- mild-moderate paint loss on the bottom and tops of the ladder along with the edges of the ladders; the edges of the ladders also exhibit a few indentations along their exterior edges; these do not appear to be chews);
1 RARE yellow aerial spinner (VG+--scuffs and possible "nibbles" on the end of each of the extension bars);
1 RARE yellow trapeze (VG+- tiny teeth marks near the holes that attach the trapeze to the yellow dowell rods);
2 RARE yellow connectors (VG-VG++-EXC--some moderate scratching and soiling);
1 VHTF 7" diameter yellow center ring with a hole in the center and several rectangular holes to hold the allow the figures or anchor the circus rigging (VG++-EXC considerable soiling and surface scuffs and scratches; green and white marks on the bottom of the center ring); and
1 HTF storage container (G-VG-- multiple dents and a few spots of rust on the bottom metal plate, along with several rubs, creases, splits, tears, rips, creases, and nicks on the exterior lithos; severe edge wear and layering on the upper edge of the canister).
The animal and circus performers are comprised of wooden figures covered with appealing lithos and white plastic appendages. They include:
1 VHTF Baby Jumbo elephant (EXC-- minor edge wear on the blanket lithos; joints are firm);
1 HTF horse (VG++-wear on feather headdress litho on the horse's right side; some darkening of litho on horse's tail on same side of horse; multiple hairline horizontal creases on horse's head on left side; some edge wear on the litho on the horse's right side; several horizontal hairline creases on the horse's head);
1 VHTF tiger (EXC--minor edge wear on belly and left edge of tiger's face on left side of body; some light creasing);
1 RARE bear (EXC--mild edge wear on both sides of piece; several indentations on bear's ear and head on left side of piece; this is only noticeable if you hold the piece up within 3" of your face and rotate it in the light; it's that hard to see);
1 VHTF dog (EXC++-NEAR MINT--some faint creasing on right side of body; loose front joints; can still stand; rear joints are tight);
1 VHTF giraffe (EXC++-tight joints; a few indentations that are only discernible if you hold the piece up to within 3" of your eyes and rotate it in the light; may or may not have been caused by a child's errant tooth; firm joints);
1 VHTF camel (EXC-- mild edge wear, along with some faint creases, on both sides of piece; litho on top of camel's head on left side of his body is missing a tiny piece);
1 RARE clown (VG+---moderate edge wear on top of head on both sides of clown; loose lithos on both lower back edges of costume; lower leg joints are tight; upper appendages are fine);
1 RARE monkey (VG++--missing pipe cleaner tail; mild-moderate edge wear on both sides; some rubs and scratches; lower legs are a little loose but still can hold a pose; NOTE: the pipe cleaner tail is often missing on these monkeys; it can be replaced with a similar length pipe cleaner and a hot glue gun; I will be leaving it up to the new owner to do this);
1 RARE seal (G-mild to moderate edge wear on both sides of piece; both sides exhibit a couple of spots with missing lithos; I have attempted to take some close up photos of these for your perusal; joints are tight); and
1 RARE Ringmaster (VG++-EXC---minor edge wear on both sides of piece; one pin-head size hole in Ringmaster's hat on the left hand litho; arm joints are tight; legs are fine).
The graphics on these lithos are whimsical and engaging. The colors are amazing. It's hard to believe that this set was manufactured in 1963....55 years ago! I have painstakingly put this set together using the best pieces I could possibly find from all across the U.S.
This play set will need to be thoroughly cleaned upon its arrival. Since the set is located in My Rough Room, I will not be cleaning it. I will be happy to provide the new owner information on how to clean this play set.
According to Fisher Price, this set was originally designed for children 3-6 years of age. I can see children older than this (up to age 9) still enjoying this set. However, children below 3 years of age or still mouthing their toys should not be given these toys. Parental supervision is advised.
This play set is not part of the recent recall of Fisher Price toys made in China. This set was made in the good ole' U.S.A. in 1963. It's amazing how this set has survived for 55 years and still belies Fisher Price's reputation for imaginative and durable toys.
This play set weighs @ 2 lbs., 12 oz. UNWRAPPED. My location is Lafayette, IN (47905).
