This is a lovely old finely detailed Celtic Knot Cross sterling brooch or pin. This intricately designed brooch is slightly domed and has a round shield shape. It is marked on the back with WJ&S and the silversmith hallmarks on both sides of .925 for sterling silver. I believe this is the makers mark for W. Johnson and Sons of Clifford Street, Birmingham England. The other marks appear to be either an M or an A in an oval cartouche, and the date letter āSā in a four-leaf clover shape. It measures approximately 1 inch in diameter and weighs .35 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 9.92 grams.
This brooch is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. I have not polished it as many people prefer the patina that only comes with age. Depending on your own taste, I will leave any polishing up to you; you can keep it in the same condition with its original patina or polish it. On the back are the original tube hinge pin stem and a āCā type clasp that works just fine. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This would be perfect for anyone who collects Scottish or Celtic jewelry. If you have Celtic ancestry this is for you. It might be used as a small kilt pin or pinned to a hat. It could be worn as a fastener for a scarf, sash, and shawl or on a dress or jacket lapel.
