During the 1930s and 1940s, The Spider pulp magazine stories and Saturday matinee serials seved as the inspiration and template for virtually every fictional urban vigilante or super hero in comics, literature and film that followed. Richard Wentworth was by day, one of the wealthiest men in the world. By night, he became a merciless, grinning demon feared by those of the criminal underwold who he would methodically hunt and slay; a crazed vigilante hunted by an ineffectual police force; a tortured man, compelled not only to bring felons to justice, but see them die for the unspeakable acts which they have committed.
