ABOUT THE SPEAKER (At time of this recording)
Will Clinger received his PhD in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981. He taught at the University of  Indiana from 1981 until he joined Tektronix in 1985, where he is Principal Scientist in the Computer research Laboratory. His research has included design, specification, and implementation of advanced programming languages. He was a principal author of MacScheme.

LECTURE SUMMARY
Symbolic languages such as Smalltalk, Scheme, and Common Lisp pose special problems for compilers. New kinds of optimizations become important, old optimizations occur in new circumstances, and run-time support requires more attention..
