This was written in the second century A.D. by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor and Stonic philosopher, beloved of his people for his humanity and humility. While defending the frontiers of his vast empire against the constant attacks by barbarian tribes, he wrote the Meidtations: hisown personal thoughts on how a wise man should lead his life.

The Meditations were one of the great philosophical works of pagan antiquity and helped prepare the classical world for the eventual spread of Christianity.
