This oil or kerosene lamp base probably had a glass chimney or globe on the top.  It may have been green or clear glass.  This glass base has depressed squares in the design.  The raised borders around the depressions have gold gilding or gold paint on them along the entire edge of the base and the edge of the top and between the depressions.  Some of that trim remains. It can be seen in the photos fairly well.  The green glass is clear but a very dark emerald green.  The wick is no longer present, but easily replaced.  The bottom of the base measures four inches in diameter and the top measures about 3 inches in diameter.  The glass portion  is just 3 inches tall, while the entire object is 5 inches tall.  This is a very old piece.
