the piece:
Carol Chapman
Carmel artist Carol Chapman began her formal training at the age of seven at the Kansas City Art Institute. She graduated from Smith College, cum laude, and later attended the prestigious Art Students' League in New York City. Carol defies typecasting and her art is in a constant state of evolution. Her work, both sophisticated and confident, ranges from realistic hard-edge painting to abstract to representational. She is also widely known for her portraits in all mediums as well as unique cut-outs in aluminum.

Internationally recognized, she has published eighteen limited edition serigraphs, including a commission from Christie's Contemporary Art. Her work became widely known in Japan after the Nagi Corporation had shows for her and later commissioned nine limited edition serigraphs. In addition the Pompidou Center in Paris published postcards of six of her images.

“ The objective of my work is to encourage people to do more than just 'see it '. I hope that they might react to it on some level – emotionally, intellectually, or even physically. I would like to invite a collaboration of sorts with the viewer. Then I would feel truly complimented.”

While my work is a statement of who I am, in many ways it is a form of love. Every experience I have ever had has served as a catalyst to my art. In recent years the simplification and abstraction in my work is merely a reflection of what is going on inside me, which I perceive as growth. My art is my diary...each day a surprise.”

Carol maintains her studio and home in Carmel with her husband.
