DICKENS: HOW TO KNOW HIM
by Richard Burton
Bobbs Merrill, 1919 (or about 1921)
First Edition
Condition: VG+ to Near Fine in VG dj

This book contains a life sketch of Charles Dickens, illuminating but sympathetic criticism of his works and many selections from Dickens. Taken together, these help the reader understand not only Dickens himself but his relation to the English novel in general, and to his own age in particular. (The author, by the way, is not the famous explorer/writer Richard Burton, who died in 1890.) This is either the first printing (1919) or an early printing (a short inscription on the ffep is dated "January 11th, 1922") of the first edition. The book has a few small wrinkles on the covers; o/w only slight exterior wear. Except for a modest sticker pull on the ffep, the interior is also very nice, with just a bit of pencil writing and light toning on the pages. The rare jacket has darkening on the spine and front cover, a small edge chip and a few short edge tears and two pieces of tape on the inside of the front fold; still, a nice example for its age. This may well be the best vintage copy of this title that you will find.
