Description:  Bee Balm is a highly ornamental and fragrant plant and therefore it is often grown in the herb garden.  The leaves, stems and roots carry a delicious orange-like perfume when crushed.   The four-sided stems bear 4-6 inch long, thin, pointed and toothed leaves from April to October.  The globular blooms of ‘Red Shades’ are surrounded by bright scarlet bracts from June to September.

Culture/Uses:  Prefers full sun to partial shade with moderately moist but well drained soil.  'Panorama' is more resistant to powdery mildew than other varieties, however good air circulation and consistent moisture is recommended to prevent problems.  When soil is allowed to dry out they are much more susceptible to foliar disease.  Removing the faded flower heads prolongs the bloom period for 8 or more weeks.  Plants will self-seed in ideal conditions.  Like other members of the mint family, plants spread quickly to fill an area and therefore should be allowed plenty of 'elbow room'.   Plants work well in mixed beds and borders, create a spectacular display when grown in mass, and are particularly useful along stream banks and ponds.  Leaves and flowers can be used raw in salads and fresh or dried leaves make a delicious tea.  Their production of large quantities of nectar makes them very attractive to bees and hummingbirds.
Germination Requirements:  Germination occurs in 2-5 weeks under warm, moist conditions following a 2-4 week period of cold stratification.  Sow direct while temperatures are still cold from late winter to very early spring or refrigerate for 2-4 weeks prior to an early spring sowing.
