David Byard is a largely self taught Australian artist with a natural ability which he has nurtured to it’s present calibre. Born in Warragul, Victoria, David is the youngest of seven children to recreational artist, Mervyn, and homemaker, Pansy. David possessed a natural artistic ability and began to draw at an early age. At this stage, most of his drawings were unflattering caricatures of his teachers. He moved on to watercolours and oil on boards after leaving school at the age of 14. In 1964 he married Val Twite and moved to Korumburra in Gippsland. The young family moved north to Griffith in New South Wales to take up a new job and it was there they raised their three children; Wayne, Mardi and Tracey. In 1980 at the age of 37 and with three young children, David made the dramatic move of making his hobby a full time career. Val was encouraging, even to the point of teaching herself the art of framing and still frames all of David's artwork. David and Val spent a total of 23 years in Griffith, during which time David's career flourished with him studying under various noted interstate art teachers. David was prepared to experiment with a variety of media and is now an exponent of many, including Oils, Acrylic, Pastel, Watercolour, Pencil, Egg Tempera and Pen and Ink. One commission by The Commonwealth Bank in Griffith was to paint a large mural ten metres long on tiles with china paint and fired. It is the only one of its kind in Australia. His work, as varied in its subjects as in its media, is represented in private collections worldwide. After traveling extensively to study and paint he has developed a passion for the Australian bush, and it is this that stands out in his work. Although a lover of detailed wildlife studies, he is best known for his Australian landscapes. David's interest in the many characters of the bush leads to their incorporation in numerous landscapes, a factor which he feels adds more emotion to his work. In 1989, with their children all moved away from home, David and Val recognised a lifelong dream and moved to a large property at Belowra on the Tuross river. Living in a mudbrick home on 500 acres of uncleared land, David is inspired daily by his surroundings. David and Val continue to enjoy traveling, and spend some time each year as Artist in Residence at luxury resorts in Ayers Rock, Darwin, Broome, Port Douglas, the Kimberley and Mount Cook in New Zealand. They travel extensively in outback and northern Australia, gathering material for exhibitions and commissions. David often paints and draws on site, incited by the natural bushland. He also participates in many exhibitions, with a total of 102 one-man exhibitions to date. David's works grace the walls of many homes and business houses in both Australia and overseas. A large proportion of paintings in recent years have been commissions, decreasing the availability of his work which is currently in very high demand.
