The binding is in acceptable condition, the pages are clean but tanned and a name is written in the front. The cover is toned, the back is creased and the front hinge is split five of the seven inches.    Acceptable. Paperback.

The scene of the story is Kashmir. Sophie, a young English widow with two children, goes to make her home there; she finds a tumbledown house in a valley carpeted with flowers below the Himalayas and settles down to live there, quietly, frugally, poetically, but soon discovers that this jewel of a place is not inertly precious but alive.
