Hangtown's corner of the Americana world is fraught with muscular roots rock that draws as much on power pop as it does the garage side of Neil Young or the classic Southern rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The group emerged in 1998, after singer/songwriter/guitarist Ted Lukas left his former group, Barely Pink. He hooked up with Finn Walling (guitars), Mike Anderson (drums), and fellow Barely Pink-alum Aaron Akers (bass) to form Hangtown, whose first CD, Here for Now, was released in August of 1999 on Blue Heart Records, a label started by Americana veteran (and fellow Tampa, FL, artist) Ronny Elliott. The album garnered enough attention to get Hangtown signed to Black Dog Records, a label founded by Cary Hudson and Laurie Stiratt of first-generation alt-country notables Blue Mountain. Black Dog Records released Hangtown's second CD, 11 Reasons, in January of 2001. Due to a legal dispute, Hangtown parted ways with Black Dog later that year. At the same time, they began work on their third album.
