This is a vintage Sterling Silver filigree brooch or pin of a Crowing Rooster. It is quite unique in that it very two-dimensional and has filigree work throughout the body. This lovely little rooster pin has touches of painted light blue enamel on the feathers of the body. There is a little bit of red on the top of the head, I'm sure at one time there was more. This is Sterling Silver and is marked with the 925 mark. It is done in tones of silver and gold. It is most likely from the 1940s or 1950s and was probably made in Italy.

This is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged pictures with minimal wear. The pin has a secure hinge and rollover safety clasp. It measures 1 3/8 inches tall and 1 5/8 inches long. It weighs .3 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 8.50 grams.

What a great gift this would be for someone born in the Year of the Rooster in the Chinese Calendar. It is one of the 12 year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese Zodiac and is a symbol of honesty. In Japan the Rooster is considered sacred and run free in the temples. The Rooster has a number of symbol meanings including illumination, courage, vigilance, strength and watchfulness.
