Old Worlds to New by Janet Podell

The Age of Exploration and Discovery

Grade:  6-12

Summary:  The first volume in a series entitled They Changed the World, this work is meant "to give history life by retelling the stories of certain people who lived in the past.

These people were explorers, adventurers, settlers, warriors, priests, and scientists, some well-known, others virtually forgotten.

Describing more than 75 interesting figures of the past 600 years, the book is organized by area (empires of Portugal and Spain, North America, Africa, China and Japan) and such categories as "Science and Medicine" and "Mariners and Pirates." Biographies are in chronological order within each section.

One unique feature here is that world events and people of the times are tied together, so that the reader knows that Bering passed through an area already visited by Dezhnev and that William Harvey, Roger Williams, and William Bradford were all affected by Charles I and the religious and political controversies of the time
