Pyramid of the Sun Pyramid of the Moon by Leonard Everett Fisher

Grade:  3-6

Summary:  Thirty miles northeast of Mexico's capital, in the ancient city of Teotihuacan, stand two monuments to the country's fascinating history--the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

For about two thousand years these mighty structures have towered over what was once the religious center of the Toltec civilization. Even after the city had succumbed to attacks from uncivilized tribes and the Toltecs had fled, the pyramids stood tall, reminding many--especially the later Aztecs--that Teotihuacan was sacred ground.

The Aztecs often worshipped there, conducting sacrificial rites on the altars of the pyramids. And with pride the doomed Aztec emperor, Montezuma, introduced the Spanish conqueror, Hernando Cortes, to these great symbols of his people's past.
