This is a beautiful cloisonné parrot brooch or pin that was made by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and came from the Gallery section, which sold high end jewelry. The colors are lovely with shades of turquoise or seafoam green on the head, wings and tail feathers. The body and wings have reddish coral color dots accenting the gold and the feathers. The parrot measures approximately 3 inches tall and 1 ½ inches wide. It has a rollover safety clasp on the back and is signed MMA.
I did find a description of this brooch that was originally provided when the brooch was purchased. I do not have a copy of the paperwork, but this is how it was described on the insert.
“Sympathetic studies of birds and animals appear in a variety of Indian decorative arts. This parrot is adapted from a detail of a resist-dyed cotton cushion cover made in the Decanni kingdom of Golconda between 1640-1650. Brimming with wildlife and vivid courtly scenes, the design reflects the exuberant taste of the region. Parrots in the wild are still found in abundance in India. The design is stamped in copper, and the pin is electroplated with 24 kt. Gold and enameled. “
It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. The gold finish is bright and shiny. The c-clasp pin back works just fine. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This will look stunning on any outfit you choose to wear it with. This is a large and showy brooch perfect for any Avian lover.
