Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr & paintings by Ronald Himler
Sonlight Core Curriculum Level 5
Grade: 3-5
Summary:
- Chizuko came to visit her friend Sadako in the hospital. She had a piece of gold paper that she had cut into a large square. With a turn here and there, it turned into a beautiful crane. Chizuko then handed the crane to Sadako and told her that if a sick peron folds one thousand paper cranes, the gods will grant her wish to be well again. Sadako was two year old when the atome bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima in Japan, where she lived with her family. Ten years later, she had leukemia as a result of radiation poisoning. Sadako had folded six hundred and forty-four cranes before she died. The flock hung above her bed on strings. Her classmates folded the rest.
