The LCD Display itself is powered by +5V DC.
This LCD does not require a negative voltage on the contrast pin like some others do! The Backlight is type EL, not LED Electroluminescent (EL) backlights give a more uniform brightness level across the entire display window, which is why many prefer them over LED backlights. To power the Electroluminescent backlight from +5VDC,
you will need an EL Lamp Driver or Inverting power supply. (Not included)
We recommend using the JKL Components Corp. Part #NDL-204 EL Lamp Driver for these displays.
The picture on this page shows the display with the backlight off in normal lighting, and with the backlight on in darkness.

If you want to build your own Inverting power supply for the backlight, it should provide between 50 and 150 VAC at 150 Hz to 1000 Hz. Backlight brightness is proportional to the voltage applied, and the color is somewhat dependent on the frequency of the applied voltage. At lower frequencies the light produced is Green and at higher frequencies it is more Blue. We recommend using the Supertex HV857 EL Lamp Driver IC if you are building your own backlight driver. It works very well for this size backlight and is available from www.mouser.com (Mouser Part # 689-HV857MG)
