This is a gorgeous vintage Taxco Mexico Sterling Silver and inlaid chip mosaic brooch or pin, that also can be used as a pendant. It is signed Metales Hecho en Mexico, with the Eagle Mark and number 1. It also has the circle hallmark with Taxco, 925 and a name I am unable to read. It is done in three (3) mixed metals, Brass, Copper and Sterling Silver, plus crushed inlaid turquoise and gemstones. The main part of the brooch is Sterling. This technique is called "Metales”, or marriage of the metals often called Metales Casados.
This is a large, beautiful piece with a modernist geometric Aztec design. It is in excellent vintage condition as you can see by the pictures, with a nice warm patina. All of the inlay is intact, no pieces missing or chipped. It measures 2 inches in diameter and weighs .7 ounces on my postage scale, which converts to 19.84 grams. It is also fitted with a nice large bale or loop on the back for a chain to slide through and should accommodate a variety of chain sizes. The original rotator on the closure is missing, but it is functioning perfectly as a C clasp with a nice tight clasp. The Eagle marking system was used from about 1948 through the late 1970s, which helps to date this brooch.
This is an amazing Mexican treasure with vibrant colors and a bold design to add to your collection of jewelry. It has a wonderful strong presence and it is a piece that will draw comments and be a conversation starter when worn.
