Edward Cleveland Kemble is regarded as the greatest of early California journalists. This book, edited by Fred Blackburn Rogers, is the first to contain a large array of Kemble's writings as a newspaper correspondent. This special first edition, intended primarily for members of the California Historical Society, was limited to 1,000 copies. It contains some illustrations, including a pull-out facsimile of a newspaper article, and an Index. The book is in basically near fine condition, with just slight cover corner wear, a slight tear at the spine bottom and partial color fading on the spine and covers. It is unread, as many of the pages are unseparated at the front edges; a clumsy attempt has been made to separate a couple of these, resulting in edge tears and chips in the margins of those pages (a slight amount of text in the Index is affected). A clear plastic dust cover, some of which is missing at the top and a bit at the bottom, protects the book. Fairly uncommon title.
