Ernest Joseph Crevier was an amateur photographer who joined the United States Navy in 1919. He was seventeen years old when he left his home in Massachusetts and arrived in San Diego, California. He served as a Musician First Class at North Island and later at the new Navel Training Center. The photographs in this book were found in his old albums and are being published for the first time as a tribute to a young sailor alone in a new town with a camera as his constant companion. He fell in love with San Diego, married a local woman, and settled down. His four children were born there and after completing his tour of duty with the Navy, continued to play in local orchestras for many years. During World War II, Ernie worked for the Civil Service and transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii from 1942 to 1943. Unfortunately, his family was unable to accompany him, but his love for photography continued during those Hawaiian years. Photographs included show candid shots of Navy personnel, local landmarks, and military equipment. Many buildings are still used and the sights are still recognized today.
