The Medicine Wheel, also known as the sacred hoop, is a profound and familiar symbol within the Indian culture. Adorned with eagle feathers, the Wheel represents a sacred object that holds deep spiritual significance. The circle of the wheel embodies the immediate universe, encompassing the family circle, friends, extended family, the world around them, and the cycles of life, such as the seasons and the stages of life.At the center of the Medicine Wheel lies a cross, which symbolizes the Four Winds. This cross represents the four cardinal directions, the four winds, the four stages of life, and the four seasons. For the Indian culture, the world is perceived through the lens of these Four Directions: west, north, east, and south. From these directions come the four winds, each carrying special meanings and symbolizing all directions of life. West - The west is where the sun sets, marking the end of the day and symbolizing the end of life. As Black Elk eloquently states, it is the direction "...toward the setting sun of his life." The great Thunderbird resides in the west, sending thunder and rain from this direction. Thus, the west is also the source of water—rain, lakes, streams, and rivers—vital for all living beings. North - The north brings the cold, harsh winds of winter. These winds are cleansing, causing leaves to fall and the earth to rest under a blanket of snow. Facing these winds, like the buffalo with its head into the storm, teaches patience and endurance. The north represents hardships and discomfort, symbolizing the trials people must endure and the cleansing they must undergo. East - The east is where the sun rises, bringing light that dawns in the morning and spreads over the earth. This direction signifies the beginning of a new day and the start of understanding, as light helps us see things clearly. On a deeper level, the east stands for wisdom, guiding people to live good lives. Traditional people rise in the morning to pray facing the dawn, seeking wisdom and understanding from the Creator. South - The south is associated with warmth and growth, as the sun reaches its highest point in the southern sky. The sun's rays draw life from the earth, and it is said that the life of all things comes from the south. Warm and pleasant winds also come from this direction. When people pass into the spirit world, they travel the Milky Way's path back to the south, returning to their origin.
