This is a rare and well-preserved Cenoceras inornatum fossil nautilus, dating back to the Pliensbachian stage of the Early Jurassic (~190 million years ago). It was discovered at Black Ven, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK, a world-renowned fossil site along the Jurassic Coast.

Cenoceras inornatum is an extinct nautiloid species that belonged to the order Nautilida. Unlike ammonites, which have intricate suture patterns, nautiloids had smooth, coiled shells with simple internal chambers for buoyancy control. This specimen showcases the classic tight coiling and ribbed surface characteristic of Cenoceras.

The Lower Lias Formation, particularly the Black Ven Marls at Lyme Regis, is famous for yielding well-preserved marine fossils, including ammonites, nautiloids, and marine reptiles. The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to reveal exceptional specimens from the early Jurassic seas.
