THE COVER In America's deadliest war, the main infantry weapon was a cal. .58 rifle-musket firing a conical Minie bullet of .577 diameter. The cover presents eight arms chambered for it. Four prewar ones have Maynard tape primers: M1855 pistol carbine, M1855 two-band rifle and three-band rifle-musket, and the M1859 rifle-musket with patchbox. Below, discarding the Maynard device, are the U.S. M1861, Colt special model, U.S. M1863 with beveled hammer and round barrel bands, and the "C. S. Richmond" version with humpback lockplate. Confederate use of captured M1855 stocking machinery necessitated the "hump" to fill space designed for the Maynard primer device. For more on rifle-muskets, see P. 26-28. Photographs by Associate Editor Rolfe Baggett.
