THE COVER One of the finest .22 rimfire target rifles of the early 20th Century was the Winchester single shot musket. Made in three styles and in both solid-frame and takedown models, it was popularly known as the Winder musket, after Col. C. B. Winder a noted marksman of the period and Inspector of Small Arms Practice of the Ohio National Guard who was involved in the rifle's development. The takedown "high wall" receiver rifle on the cover is in .22 long rifle and is equipped with a Lyman 103 full-adjustable tang sight (for more on tang sights see "Tang Sights" p. 39). Rifle, owned by William E. Harwell of Rhode Island, was photographed by him with a 4 x 5 View Camera on Ektachrome Type B film, using quartz lighting.
