Optional Coatings & Mechanical Finishes:

These can be professionally painted, powder coated, or anodized (anodized can be transparent) for an additional charge. For the mechanical finish, you can choose between our rough grinded finish (shown in the images above), brushed, or matte. Examples of the latter two can be found on Google Images. We do not recommend a matte or brushed finish on raw aluminum, because they are easily scratched. It is worth noting that the mechanical finish may not be very noticeable through paint or powder coat that is not transparent.

However, we prefer the raw aluminum. It will not rust, and the rough grinded finish will allow scratches on the soft aluminum to blend over time (matte and brushed do not have this benefit and protection of these is up to the surface coating). We prefer this simplicity over worrying about scratches in paint. We recommend renaissance wax for protecting all our raw metal products in mild to moderately corrosive environments. Simply wipe it on with a cloth (it only takes a very thin layer). In 15 minutes it will cure into a invisible, hard protective layer. This wax was designed by UK museums to protect many of their items. It is the gold standard of this type of product and worth every penny compared to others. Finally, this wax is known to enhance the color, luster and other visual aspects of the item. Some level of corrosion may still be experienced.

Corrosion Mitigation:

Depending on your climate, the raw aluminum may develop a white chalky surface over time due to corrosion. This can be periodically addressed with an aluminum restoration solution. In addition, further corrosion such as pitting may be experienced in humid and/or salty coastal environments. This can be mitigated to varying degrees with primer, paint, Penetrol, Permalac, powder coat, etc.. However, it is extremely common to use raw aluminum outdoors. For example, you can see raw aluminum on trucks and trailers on the road every day.

Another great option is to use a two part can of spray paint, or even any spray paint (clear with no primer is an acceptable option, but you should use a paint that is designed for direct to metal application). This allows you to always have a can around, and if it is scratched you can sand it and fix it. Additionally, when the paint eventually needs to be redone, after however many years, it is very easy to quickly sand it and respray it.

Steel Version:

All of our products can also be made out of mild steel for a 20% lower price. These will rust and all of the same coatings can be applied. Raw steel is a viable option indoors and out. In dry climates it takes a very very long time for steel to rust to a point where the structure begins to fail (potentially 100+ years). The rate of corrosion is likely only a concern if the item is used raw outdoors in very humid and/or salty coastal environments. In mildly humid environments, rust still takes quite a while to cause structural failure, and low effort coatings can extend this significantly. Further coatings of interest include Rustoleum spray paints, cold galv spray, and rust converter.

Any Size Available (Email [email protected]):

All of our products can be made in any size (within reason). If the options you would like are not listed on the marketplace you would like to use email us ([email protected]). Please include the product name, length x width x height you desire, and the site you would like to purchase from. Also, specify the mechanical finish and the coating, if you would like something other than roughly grinded raw aluminum. We will add a listing for your desired item.
