Synopsis:
This film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. Single mother Grace (played by Mary Louise Parker) moves into Sputnik's ancestral home with twin sons Jared and Simon (played by Freddie Highmore) and eldest daughter Mallory (played by Sarah Bolger), only to encounter a series of strange events. During his solo investigation, Jared discovered the elf exploration guide of his great grandmother's father Arthur Sputnik (played by David Strathairn) in the rooftop attic. Despite a warning on the surface of the book, Jared still read the guide and then came across one of the elves described in the book, the brown elf Simbolitek (voiced by Martin Short). Simbolitek warned Jared not to take the book outside the Spatovik ancestral home protection circle, in case the evil spirit Moglas (played by Nick Nolte) takes the guide as his own and harms other elves. But Mogolas' subordinates have learned of the fact that the guide has been rediscovered and mistakenly arrested Simon.
