The Mexican journalist and novelist Heriberto Frias wrote the stories. In 1900, the Maucci Brothers, a Spanish publisher, commissioned famous Mexican engraver Jose Guadalupe Posada to illustrate a series of pamphlets for children on the history of Mexico. The cover illustrations are the only mechanically produced chromolithographs by Posada.
