In ancient times, this region encompassed most of present-day Aydın and Muğla provinces, as well as the western edge of Denizli province. The northern boundary is defined by the Büyük Menderes (Maiandros) River, while the Indos River forms the border with Lycia to the east. The Aegean Sea borders the west and south.

SALBAKOS is the ancient name for the area of present-day Denizli-Babadag. The city of Aphrodisias, a center of art and sculpture, is located on the western slope of Salbakos Mountain.
