In ancient times, this region encompassed most of present-day Aydın and Muğla provinces, as well as the western edge of Denizli province. The northern boundary is defined by the Büyük Menderes (Maiandros) River, while the Indos River forms the border with Lycia to the east. The Aegean Sea borders the west and south.
LATMOS Mountain is located at the eastern shore of the Latmos Bay, on the border of the ancient regions of Caria and Ionia. Today, it is known as Beşparmak Dağı. Along the shores of Bafa Lake, which formed as the Mendres River filled the Latmos Bay, lies the remains of the ancient city of Herakleia Latmos. Bafa Lake hosts many mythological legends and a variety of bird species, and it is also home to eel species that migrate from the Sargasso Sea in Mexico, traveling 7,000 kilometers in larval form to reach Bafa Lake after a 3-year journey. After living in fresh water for a time, eels undertake a reverse journey back to their breeding grounds.
