With EPA and DHA from fish and krill oil
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
are
omega-3 fatty acids
of marine origin that have many important functions in the body. For example, they are a component of biological membranes and are required to form so-called resolvins, which play an important role in regulating inflammation.
EPA and DHA
are essential for mammals and cannot be supplied through plant-based food as they do not occur in plants. Theoretically, the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA can be synthesized from plant-based alpha-linolenic acid, but the conversion rate is very low in dogs (< 5%) and non-existent in cats due to a missing enzyme. They are therefore best consumed through food in the form of marine oils.
